Education is the light of life. In this modern age, human cannot survive without the knowing. Education and knowledge are a key to all the doors to success. Education empowers a person, community, nation and the Globe. The concept of education for the development is a new idea. At least new to the excluded, marginalized and vulnerable group and communities. In last few years, Nepal is gaining good achievement in the development of education. However, quality education is still lacking. In Karnali Province, 42% of women have no education, 13% have attended primary education, 26% have some secondary education, and 20% have SLC and above education. Women of Karnali has less exposure to mass media only 1 percent. Nevertheless, the exposure to mass media of women in whole country is only 3 percent. Out of 15,013, 4801 numbers of women are represented in the district and VDC level. Women’s position in decision making and leadership position is very less. According to the Demographic and Health Survey (2016) in Karnali province, only 35 percent of women know where to get HIV test and only 8 percent of women have been tested. It is argued that, education is the main barriers to all of the described factors. Women were not emphasized to have an education. They were emphasized to work as a homemaker, child bearer and care taker.
OUR MOVES
WWS recognized that gender-based violence, harmful socio-cultural practices, illiteracy, and considerable degree of inequalities and exclusions must eliminate from the society. Women are more vulnerable to these particular challenges due to deep rooted patriarchal mindset and cultural taboos, lack of awareness regarding the different policies and services of government, and lack of influence over the decision-making process in the household and communities. The solution could be to teach them letters, words and their rights through literacy classes. Since its establishment, WWS had conducted various literacy programs for girls and women in a first place. Literacy program is including in most of other projects too since WWS had identified education and giving them literacy skills helped women to uplift their status. The literacy manual was developed. In literacy manual the text on women rights, gender-based violence, business knowledge is included. Women are learning to read and write in every project as a main component after 2017. Even the project was not directly focused to literacy. Before corona, some project was only focused on literacy. However, it is becoming the main cross cutting theme in all the projects.
